Recently, been thinking, following a conversation with a friend. His question was why should we pray when God already knows our state of affairs, and knows what we need. Ultimately, he said, God's going to do what God wants to do because he knows what's good for us...
The short answer is Jesus said to his disciples to pray and so we should. He even showed them the manner in which to pray as noted in the Lord's prayer (Matthew 6:5-15). He then set an example. He quite often, as a matter of fact daily, withdrew from the crowd and went away in to the Mount of Olives or the Garden of Gethsemane to pray by himself. And at other times, had a handful of his disciples with him to draw strength in prayer. Here was the Son of God, praying to Father God. Praying over his fears and needs, while submitting to the perfect will of God.
Jesus told his disciples to pray so that temptations will not overtake them. Prayer is submission. Submission to a higher power. Admitting your insufficiency in front of an all sufficient God and asking for guidance from an all knowing, all powerful God. Prayer, personal private prayer is a sign of humility. A sign of dependency on God. In Jeremiah 13 God through his prophet tells his people (Jeremiah's linen belt) he wants them to cling to him.
We have to be intentional in our prayer life. Just as we are deliberate in planning out our education, profession, marriage, children and our future. We need to set aside time for personal prayer, a conversation between you and God. This is not for others, but for your personal spiritual growth. And you grow every day in the power of the Holy Spirit.
